Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
January 18-25, 2007

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Theme for 2007:

He even makes the deaf to hear
and the mute to speak” (Mk 7:37)

"All the faithful should remember that the more effort they make to live holier lives according to the Gospel, the better they will further Christian unity and put it into practice. For the closer their union with the Father, the Word, and the Spirit, the more deeply and easily will they be able to grow in mutual brotherly love."

Decree on Ecumenism of the Second Vatican Council, 7.

The search for unity: throughout the year

The traditional date for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is 18-25 January. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Paul Watson to cover the days between the feast of St Peter and the feast of St Paul, and therefore have a symbolic meaning. But the search for Christian unity is not limited to one week each year. We encourage you therefore to understand the material presented here as an invitation to find opportunities throughout the whole year to express the degree of communion which the churches have already received, and to pray together for that full unity which is Christ’s will.
