Confirmation“By the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.” Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the Faith by word and deed. — Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1285. BISHOP:  Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Candidates:  I do

BISHOP:  Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who came upon the apostles at Pentecost and today is given to you sacramentally in confirmation?
Candidates:  I do

BISHOP:  Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
Candidates:  I do

BISHOP: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

All: Amen

The candidates and sponsors should come up one row at a time; have those waiting remain seated until it is their turn.  Upon returning to their seat, they are to sit.  This allows the entire congregation to get a better view of the ceremony.

ONLY the sponsor comes up with the candidate.   The candidate should have a nametag with his/her CONFIRMATION NAME on it.  The sponsor places his or her RIGHT hand upon the RIGHT shoulder of the candidate and says:  “BISHOP, I PRESENT…” (SAY CONFIRMATION NAME CLEARLY).

Following the ANOINTING, the confirmand will respond “AMEN”.   And, following the greeting “Peace be with you”, they will respond “AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT”.    PLEASE NOTE:  Instead of shaking the hand of the Confirmand, the Bishop will place his hand on their shoulder.

Please begin any music AFTER the first 3 to 5 candidates have been anointed.  It should be played or sung very softly. This allows the congregation to hear the form of the SacramentFor information about receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation at St Anne’s, CLICK HERE.Confirmation
